The mom who left her 6-year-old alseep in the front seat of her minivan while she took her younger child into Starbucks for her caffeine fix, quite a ways away.
I was on my way to see New Moon with my mother and daughter when we came across this situation. We kinda looked at each other and looked around the parking lot. No momma in sight. We decided we had to do something, but not really sure what. Then we saw a woman come out of Starbucks and thought maybe she was the owner...nope, different vehicle. I finally told my mother to go buy the tckets and I would trek across the parking lot to the policeman parked at the empty end of this lot - it was quite a distance and likely would make me miss the beginning of the movie getting involved. But we felt like if something happened to that kid, we could have prevented it buy intervening. Then we saw momma come out and unlock the car with her keyless entry.
Hey, at least she didn't leave the keys in the car with the kid!

I've had a similar situation - mom left a toddler and 7 year old together in the minivan in a shopping center lot. I guess she thought the 7 y.o. was old enough to supervise?! We waited for almost 10 minutes to make sure the kids were ok and to see if someone would return quickly. Then asked the nearest store to make a loudspeaker announcement just in case. Finally the store owner called the police. It took the police a while to show up, so at this point the kids had been alone in the car well over half an hour. We left at that point knowing there was someone watching. I hope mom learned something when she got done shopping and found the police waiting with her kids.
My BFF to the rescue!! What was that woman thinking?
I think they just must not know any better. Some people are just stupid. It was nice of you to notify the police. These folks need to be told that it is not appropriate and their kid could be on the next milk carton. Sad but true.
What on earth did you think would happen? Do you think there are child abductors just hanging out in parking lots on the off chance that there is a child asleep in a car? And then, what, they'll break the window and drag the screaming child out? All in the 15 minutes that mom is inside getting her Starbucks? And through all of this, NOBODY WILL NOTICE?
Really?
Rini - maybe not as likely as the kid waking up to discover mom is gone (and not in sight as the store was quite a ways away), freaking out and crying, getting out of the car and wondering around in the parking lot where he gets hit by a car or abducted...or just plain ole scared to death.
Are you seriously saying you would leave your kid in this situation? Really? This ain't Smalltown, USA that I live in. Bad sh*t happens all the time. The mother was an idiot to do what she did and so are you if you think this scenario was ok. No way to sugarcoat this one.
