Who needs breastfeeding?

Well....breastfeeding is under attack yet again. Check out this article at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/health/article6169478.ece . The article talks about the drug cabergoline, which is used to suppress hyperprolactinemia. Prolactin is the horomone responsible for breastmild production. Apparentlyit is being given to suppress milk in postpartum moms because they don't want to breastfeed. There's a lot of shock over the use of this drug for this reason. But it seems like it's more about breast vs. bottle. There's talk about the breastfeeding police...I have not seen any such thing where I am! In fact we have to fight to breastfeed around here!

The other thing that really p*sses me off is the comments about breasts being for sex, not breastfeeding. Hmmm...One could say the same about vaginas also. We use those for sex, and we birth babies through them (hopefully). And unfortunately the arguement for elective c/s to protect the vajay-jay is already swirling around!

Let me know what you think!

PS sorry about the lack of an actual link...I'm blogging from my cell so am limited.

The link worked fine for me. But here it is again, just in case this will work better.

I sometimes get a kick out of the "organs used for sex" mentality, because it only seems to apply to women. Why is it that we never talk about how that the penis is used for both sex and urination? Should men have a tube cut into their bladder to preserve their penises from the non-sexual function of peeing?? Why is it that only women's sexual/practical organs must be preserved for purely sexual use???

Ugh! This is such a stupid thing to still have to fight for. Women listen up out there...breasts make milk, and babies can eat the best source of food from you!!! Thankfully there is an option of formula if there are circumstances beyond your control. But for the majority of women this breast milk is awesome baby food. Get over yourselves and stand up for your babies!!! (I know I am preaching to the choir on this blog, but it felt fun for a moment to step up on the soapbox and rant.)

This is an outrage- it seriously is. Since when is the woman's body under scrutiny when it comes to bearing and nursing children?!?!?! We can CHOOSE to abort but we can't choose to breastfeed or give birth vaginally?

I don't think any of this will come to fruition. Seems really batty and weird. But it's still maddening.
